Expanding Civic Engagement Beyond Our Own Neighborhoods
Last year, I wrote an article titled Resolutions for Our Communities: A Guide for 2025. This year, my hope is to encourage every resident to deepen their civic engagement and to expand their involvement beyond their immediate neighborhoods and personal networks. Jackson grows stronger when we see the success of every community as connected to our own.
Each of us has skills, experiences, and knowledge that can benefit others. Residents from well-established neighborhood associations can lend guidance to communities that are just beginning to organize. Those accustomed to regular cleanups can help plan and support efforts in areas that want to launch similar initiatives. Mentorship, shared resources, and simple acts of participation can make a lasting difference.
Not everyone has extra time, and that is understandable. But even when schedules are full, there are still ways to contribute. Financial support, donated supplies, or simply helping spread the word about community events can move important work forward. Every dollar, hour, and act of encouragement helps build momentum.
Jackson will never reach its full potential until all of our neighborhoods are strengthened and supported. When communities invest in one another, we create safer streets, healthier public spaces, and stronger relationships across the city. Civic engagement is not just about improving where we live but about helping the entire city thrive.
I invite every resident to look beyond familiar boundaries and consider how they can support another neighborhood this year. Together, we can ensure that progress in Jackson is shared by all.
