Spring in Bloom: Jackson’s Plant Sales Kick Off Neighborhood Beautification

When the days get longer and yards begin to wake up after the winter cold, Jackson gardeners turn to a handful of annual plant sales to kick off the spring season. From hearty old standards to heirloom varieties, native species, colorful annuals and perennials, and more, Jackson’s plant sales offer the area numerous options and opportunities for home and neighborhood beautification.

Come to the Native Plant Fest at the Mississippi Farmer’s Market (April 11, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 929 High Street in Jackson) to choose from a wide selection native plants and foliage, including pollinator-friendly species. In keeping with the local vibe of the farmer’s market, this event also features live music, local honey vendors and much more.

At the Metro Master Gardeners Annual Plant Sale at Mynelle Gardens (Saturday, April 25, 8 a.m. to noon at 4736 Clinton Boulevard in Jackson) expect thousands of plants, expert advice from MSU Extension Service Master Gardeners and the opportunity to stroll through historic Mynelle Gardens at no charge. Cash and cards are accepted. This event is a longtime staple of the Jackson area, and the storied Mynelle Gardens make a beautiful day just about as beautiful as a day can get.

The Mississippi Museum of Art Spring Plant Sale (also Saturday, May 2, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 380 S. Lamar Street in Jackson) features a wide selection of native plants, shrubs and perennials well suited to central Mississippi’s hot & humid climate. Chat with MSU Extension Service Master Gardener experts to discover plants suited to the exact conditions and environment of your yard.

For a nearby sale, the Madison County Master Gardeners Spring Plant Sale (Saturday, May 2, 8 a.m. to noon at 998 Highway 51 in Madison) will have a host of trees, natives, succulents, houseplants, herbs, vegetables, perennials and annuals. As a Master Gardener group with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, their members have knowledge to help you pick the best plants for your yard and how to care for them.

So mark your calendars and get ready to dig into Jackson’s spring plant sales — the unofficial kickoff to a season of neighborhood renewal.
