Jackson is governed through a mayor–council structure, with a full-time mayor elected by the entire city and seven part-time council members elected from each of Jackson’s seven wards. Under Section 21-8-9 of the Mississippi Code of 1972, as amended, the City Council serves as the city’s legislative branch and fulfills the responsibilities outlined in state law.
